Trailer Industry Safety Standards
A few years ago, the horse trailer industry has laid out all the regulations in manufacturing trailers that meet safety and security standards to protect the welfare of such mighty steeds as well as its owner’s. The features that are covered by the regulation include trailer size, weight, and placement of lights, axles and brakes. However, it failed to give importance on the materials used to make such trailers which also failed to address concerns for the horses and their owners. Today, the government is more vigilant in regard to regulating the manufacture of horse trailers to ensure safety and security of the animals and their owners. Aside from that, more traffic safety guidelines are in place to protect horses and owners on the road.
Some of the regulations includes making sure that trailer is level when attached to the towing vehicle; making sure the nose weight is only between 50 and 100 kilograms; tyre pressures must be appropriate; and jockey wheel and corner steadies or prop stands must be fully wound up and secure. Also, stabilisers should be fitted to prevent incidents of snaking of the trailer while on the road. Stabilisers will stop a caravan from being unstable and moving from side to side. However, proper driving techniques must still be practised as stabilisers do not overcome problems caused by poor loading or poor driving. Trailer drivers are expected to drive at a legal speed limit and should not travel in the right-hand lane of motorways with three or more lanes.
