Horse racing, an equestrian sport, has been practiced for many centuries. Chariot races were highly popular during Roman times. Hence, there are myths and legends involving horses. Horse racing is strongly associated with gambling.

Horse racing has various forms, of which the thoroughbred racing is the most popular and is humorously termed as “The Sport of Kings.” It is done on a flat track or over jumps as steeple-chasing or hurdles races. Harness racing is famous in Australia, New Zealand, and eastern United States. It is even more popular than thoroughbred racing in Canada and some parts of Europe. Quarter racing is well-known in western United States. Endurance racing involves purebred Arabian horses and is popular in many American states, Europe, and the Middle East.

The different types of racing concerns different breeds of horses. They also differ in distance. Thoroughbred race is run on moderate distance at very fast pace. In a harness race, standard bred horses trot with a harness instead of gallop with a saddle. Quarter race is run on short distance, while endurance race is on a very long distance.
