Horses eat grass but not all grass is safe for horses for it can be poisonous for them too. If you have horses, it is always safe to go for grass hays and legumes. You can choose to have grass hays that have a high level of crude protein, which could range as high as 14 percent while legumes such as alfafa can range from 18 to as high as 25 percent.

In terms of the maturity of the grass, it would also be good to know that more nutrients are contained in the leaves of premature grasses. Keep your horses away from hays that are powdery white or black for any indication of mold can be very harmful.
